Bilateral Standard DARthroplasties Click on images to enlarge for viewing. Case Information: Female Flat Coated Retriever, two years old, weight 53 pounds. Presented for hip evaluation. Evaluation: On presentation the dog was walking with a lack of extension and a short stride. There was slight muscle atrophy on both the right and left hindlimb. The sit test was okay, but the stand test was positive. The angle of subluxation and reduction was 38/17 on the left hip and there was a fast spot at 31° on the right hip. Radiographs revealed filling of the right and left acetabula, pelvic rotation to the right, femoral osteoarthritis on both hips, and cupping. Diagnosis: Bilateral moderate reducible hip dysplasia. Treatment: Bilateral DARthroplasty. Pathologic Notes: On the right hip the joint capsule was stretched and minimally thickened. On the left hip the femoral head was sitting lateral to the acetabular rim, and the joint capsule was moderately thickened. Three year follow up: The owner reported that the dog was competing in agility, and had recently earned its CD title. On presentation the dog had normal weight bearing and normal gait on both hindlimbs. Physical examination revealed a good return to the thigh musculature. There was limited abduction on both hips and the stand test was slightly positive. Radiographs showed mature DARthroplasty formation with good coverage of the femoral heads. A lateral radiograph of the spine showed slight spondylosis on several of the lumbar vertebra.
